If you are on windows 8 or Windows 8.1, you can get realtime alerts of new email through the Windows 8 Mail application. All you need to do is:
1. Open the Mail app. 
2. Add your gmail account by holding Windows Button + C

•   Go to settings

•   Accounts

•   Add an account

3. To get notification of new email,

• Open the Mail app.
• Press the Windows key + C to open the Charms Bar.
• Click on Settings > Accounts.
• Select the account of your choice (if multiple). 

• Click on the "Show email notifications" menu and make your selection:
  • Never
  • Email your favorites
  • All email
